PaiLai’s closet emphasizes unique selections that uplift girls of color who want to express themselves with imagery and designs that embody their culture, their families, and their communities. After looking in several children-specific clothing shops, including a local Walmart and Target, in the search for items that had images of young girls playing sports and hanging with friends, the Rollins family were unsuccessful in finding clothing or designs that represented their twin girls Paityn and Lailah. Almost all of the clothing designs had caucasian girls, with bright glitter and fun designs, with the exception of one shirt that had a slightly brown girl who was paired with another caucasian girl who was dressed in a sequence outfit, whereas the girl of color had on a simple dress design. It was from this experience that PaiLai’s Closet was created.
The mission of PaiLai’s closet is to create and share as many inspirational designs and culturally inspired clothing that girls 14 years and younger can both feel confident and proud wearing. These designs are inclusive, fun, and inspirational images that allow girls of color to see themselves, their friends, and their family in a positive and uplifting site.
